Updated for 2026: Build a maintainable ESM3-enabled application with up-to-date SDK practices, server-side secrets and scientific quality checks.
Use a narrow service layer
Implement a server-side adapter around the maintained ESM package. It should check input formats, select supported model IDs, handle authorization, standardize errors and expose only the results your UI needs.
Separate model roles
Different tasks may call ESM3, ESMC or ESMFold2. A clean model router maps generation to ESM3, sequence embeddings to ESMC and structure prediction to ESMFold2, while exposing common monitoring and provenance. Avoid silently swapping tasks and implying equivalent outputs.
Implement useful safeguards
Add rate limiting, expenditure limits, retries for transient failures and cancellation support where available. Never execute Python scripts submitted by users or expose raw API secrets. Validate file uploads and outputs and consider abuse prevention for dual-use biological inquiries.
Make outputs auditable
Display which model produced the result, its version, inputs, constraints, caveats and citations to official docs. Keep calculations and generated output distinct from empirical evidence. Validate with supported benchmarks and human experts.

Editorial note: Updated October 2026. Distinguish scientific literature and current product documentation from speculative applications; verify current API details before running code.
