Protein AI FAQ: ESM3, ESMC, ESMFold2 and Biohub in 2026

Answers to beginner questions about ESM3 access, models, computational requirements, code examples and scientific limitations.

In brief: Start here if you are new to ESM models or are returning after the 2024 launch. Model capabilities, names and access pathways have changed.

Is ESM3 the same as ESM2?

No. ESM2 is an earlier sequence language-model family; ESM3 is a later multimodal protein generation model. Do not reuse the ESM2 identifier esm2_t6_8M_UR50D in an ESM3 tutorial.

How do I access ESM3?

Install the esm Python package, then use a supported local checkpoint or the Biohub Platform endpoint with your account token. See the official model quickstart for up-to-date IDs and permissions.

Can I run ESM3 on a laptop?

It depends on the checkpoint, RAM/GPU memory and performance expectations. Local inference is not automatically suitable for every consumer laptop. Hosted inference may be an alternative when permitted by policy and budget.

Does ESM3 predict protein function with certainty?

No. Protein sequence, structure and functional properties are complex. Computational predictions must be evaluated against relevant experimental evidence.

What is the difference between ESMC and ESMFold2?

ESMC is focused on learned protein representations; ESMFold2 specializes in structural prediction. ESM3 focuses on multimodal generation.

Are these models licensed for commercial use?

Read the exact current license for each checkpoint, dataset and API service. Do not assume that model weights, cloud access and training data all have identical terms.

Can AI-generated proteins be used clinically?

Not solely on the basis of model output. Clinical or therapeutic use needs extensive scientific, safety and regulatory validation.
