Updated for 2026: Diagnose ESM3 Python installation issues using supported packages, virtual environments and current Biohub docs.
Start with a clean environment
Confirm the active Python interpreter and pip executable match your virtual environment. Use python -m pip show esm to check installed package metadata. Read error messages in full and isolate dependency conflicts in a fresh environment.
Differentiate library and service problems
An import error or missing module is usually an environment issue. HTTP 401, 403, quota or service errors require checking Biohub authentication, entitlements and status. A successful pip install esm does not imply you have a valid remote API key.
Avoid outdated documentation
Examples importing abandoned facebookresearch/esm code paths or ESM2 checkpoint names are not valid proof of ESM3 support. Compare your installed SDK release with the current Biohub examples.
Report a reproducible bug
Include sanitized stack traces, Python and library versions, operating system, selected model name and a minimal, non-sensitive input. Never publish your actual API key or confidential research sequences.

Editorial note: Updated October 2026. Distinguish scientific literature and current product documentation from speculative applications; verify current API details before running code.
